Traffic wishing to to turn right at Switch Island on to A5758

Drivers wishing to turn right onto A5758 coming along A59 Northway from the Preston direction often assume there will be a right turn option by going straight ahead at the junction with M58 and M57. However, you need to follow the road left towards M57 and then turn right onto the A5758 access road.

Unfortunately, the first sign to tell you this is located right on the island at the start of the M57, when strangers to the area will have already committed to going straight on, being unaware of the route they should have taken.

As a result, a number of serious accidents have occurred with vehicles making an illegal right turn from the A5036 onto the A5758 at the light-controlled junction, either assuming it to be permissible, or frustrated at the lack of signage clarity and 'chancing' a right turn against oncoming traffic.

A clear sign is needed several hundred yards back on the A59 approach, directing traffic to initially filter left before the traffic island so as to gain the access road to the A5758, which then crosses the A5036 at 90 degrees.

The signage has always been confusing at this major junction following the building of the A5758 route and some changes were made about a year after it opened.

However, this particular issue has not been addressed, nor looks likely to be so in the near future.

Considering that this new road was over 40 years in getting approved and over 5 years in the making, it seems staggering that so little time, thought or funding has been made available for clear signage - even after two attempts!
